Galiano Island is the easiest of the Gulf islands to reach from the Lower Mainland, with a quick 45 minute ferry ride from Tsawwassen. The main center of activity is found closest to Sturdies Bay ferry terminal in the south end. Any number of amenities within walking distance make it tempting to explore the area, with an excellent bookstore, cafes, shops and galleries all nearby.
A farmers market with plenty of local fresh produce and baked goods runs Saturdays from the May long weekend through October and many art studios welcome visitors year round. Excellent restaurants situated on acres of private forest land offer unique cuisine in quiet relaxation.
Kayaking is a paddler’s paradise in these calm protected waters, abundant wildlife, an underdeveloped coastline of wave-sculptured sandstone, and NO CROWDS! Multi-day tours, canoe, and paddle board rentals are available all year round. For the hikers and climbers, Mount Galiano is a beautiful climb to the top, with an amazing panoramic view of our gorgeous coastline. As well as many walking trails and hidden gems all around the island.
The best part of Galiano besides the beauty of course, is that there are no preditors on this island. This island is home to deer, racoons, seals, otters, sea lions, owls, piliated woodpeckers, and plenty of birds!
This festival is for mushroom enthusiasts and naturalists happening over 2 days. If you happen to be on the island learn and enjoy visiting Galiano's yearly Mushroom Festival displaying hundreds of different mushrooms and offering presentations.
